Wellness Wednesday: Musical Movement

Today’s Wellness Wednesday is the most light hearted workout ever featured on here. It’s intended to make you smile while you’re suffering. Without any further ado I present to you, the Whipped Into Shape Workout!IMG_3327

This workout is inspired by the musical Legally Blonde. If you haven’t seen it you can watch the full Broadway show here but if you don’t have time for that at least check out this clip of the song you’ll be working out to in a few minutes here!

My college did this musical last year and as a dancer we had a full on workout to this song that we had to do and make it look effortless! It was so much fun but so exhausting at the same time.

So here’s my challenge for you:

  • Jump rope to the full song!
  • Whenever there is a speaking break hold a plank or do some pushups.
  • If you find that super easy start adding in little jump roping tricks like jumping on one foot, crossing your arms, or doing a double jump. You can also substitute burpees for the plank/push ups!

I hope you guys find this as entertaining as I did! Let me know how you made out!

Keep jumping!

Two summers ago our family vacation was to Chicago to do the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon and I wanted to share some of my favorite places with you guys.

Our first stop was the waterfront. It was so beautiful and just a little windy.

And next

The Bean! This was one of the things I was most excited to see in Chicago. Honestly, I’m not sure why I just think it’s a really cool landmark. The second time we visited the Bean was at night and we got to see a proposal!

The line inside was way shorter but how could I pass up the opportunity to get a cupcake from an ATM?

Like how cute?! Dress is Ralph Lauren and I found the same one (in a small) on Poshmark for $8! Use code  MARISSAMOQ when signing up for Poshmark to get a $5 credit. Get the dress here for $3!

Another thing that was amazing about Chicago was the architecture! I wish we could have gone on an architecture tour but there’s just not enough time in the day. The building on the far right is actually a parking garage!

I can’t even tell you how many pictures I have of that rhombus building at night. So beautiful!

Another fun spot to go to was Navy Pier. We did not get to ride the Centennial Wheel because we were there during the Centennial celebration but there is still so much to do there!  We could have walked up and down the pier all day!

And how could we not go to Wrigley! I’ll always be a Red Sox girl at heart but I think Wrigley is the Fenway of the National League.

Some other fun things we did: stop at White Castle and take a double decker bus tour!

Last but not least the actual race! It was such a nice route around the city of Chicago. I would definitely go back and do it again if I had the chance. As a lover of all bling, I convinced my family to do the remix challenge: a 5k one day and then the half marathon the next. The weather was so great while I was running but as soon as i finished the sky opened up and it was pouring!

To wrap things up if you ever have the chance to go to the Windy City… take me with you! It was so fun exploring a new place and I’m counting down the days until I’m back!

Happy travels!

Weekly Style 14

Today’s Weekly Style is one of my favorite preppy brands: Lauren James!

I got my first dress from there during their sale last summer and it ended up being the inspiration behind my logo! Unfortunately the Stratton is all sold out but the Livingston dress is a similar idea and now they have it in solid seersucker!

They just released some new spring clothes so I figured I would do a quick roundup of their new dresses.

How cute is this dress! I think the 3/4 length sleeves make this the perfect spring dress! This was my favorite color combo but they also have pink stripes with a blue collar and blue stripes with a pink collar.

Sullivan Seersucker Dress

I am obsessed with the back of this dress. If you are graduating this year I think this is such a perfect graduation dress. It would be such a cute photo op to have someone take a picture of you with your gown over your shoulder. This dress also comes in red, pink, and blue but I love how clean the white looks.

Avery Solid Seersucker

This dress is so adorable! It reminds me of the fit of a Lilly dress but it’s seersucker! This would be the perfect Easter dress and it comes in a variety of colors!

Landry Seersucker

What preppy girl doesn’t love scallops? And when they’re combined with seersucker it’s a match made in heaven! This dress comes in every seersucker color under the sun and it also has pockets! Could it get any better?

This dress is also a classic LJ look that is now available in solid seersucker! The front is a sweetheart neckline and the back is to die for! I am absolutely obsessed with the backs of the LJ dresses there’s such an attention to detail.

That’s it for today’s post! Stay stylish!

With the exception of the first photo collage, all photos are from the Lauren James website. I do not take credit for owning them!

Wellness Wednesday: Smoothies

Today’s Wellness Wednesday is all about smoothies! I’m not the best at eating healthy, it’s something I’m working on but it can be such a struggle sometimes. I can exercise everyday without a problem but when it comes to eating healthy…

I wanted to take this Wednesday to show you the types of smoothies I love and hopefully you’ll love them too!

You’ll notice I don’t write “put in 10 blueberries”, this is because I really don’t count anything. I don’t even measure how much Silk Milk goes in. If you’re making a strawberry banana smoothie and you like strawberries more than bananas, go ahead and load your smoothie with more strawberries. The only thing I do measure is the avocado because I will only put half in.

To make my smoothies I use the the Magic Bullet. It’s small so it’s perfect for my dorm room. It’s also super easy to clean- just put water and dish soap in, run it again, and then rinse it out!

Smoothie 1

  • Banana
  • Strawberries
  • Silk Milk- Vanilla
  • Chia Seeds

Smoothie 2

  • Banana
  • Peanut Butter
  • Silk Milk- Vanilla
  • Chia Seeds

Smoothie 3

  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Silk Milk- Vanilla
  • Chia Seeds

Smoothie 4

  • Banana
  • Peach
  • Strawberries
  • Silk Milk- Vanilla

Smoothie 5

  • Banana
  • 1/2 Avocado*
  • Blueberries
  • Peanut Butter
  • Silk Milk- Vanilla
  • I’m not the biggest avocado fan so I usually put extra peanut butter in when I use an avocado.

Smoothie 6

This is a smoothie bowl I bought at Nourish Wellness Cafe in Northampton so I figured I would share the ingredients with you!

  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Bananas
  • Coconut and chia seeds as toppings
  • I’m not sure if they used a liquid base or not

And the final product is below:

Here are some popular toppings:

  • Shredded coconut: the only time I’ve had this is at Nourish and it was so good!
  • Chia seeds: I usually incorporate chia seeds into my smoothie so I don’t typically put them on top.
  • Granola
  • Almonds
  • Chopped up pieces of fruit: if it didn’t all fit into the blender, add it to the top!

So what if you don’t have a blender? Try Naked Juices. I just tried the Blue Machine the other day and it was amazing! It has apples, blackberries, blue berries, and a banana.

If you want any inspiration go look at @smoothiebowls on Instagram. I haven’t made one that beautiful yet but one day! If you try to make any of these let me know how it goes! And if you have any smoothie suggestions leave them in the comments!

Say Yes to the Dress

IMG_1781This is my favorite thing I have ever worn. Period. If anyone has a prom that they still need a date for, I’m free and looking for any excuse to wear this again.

As I hinted at in my prom post, I did the exact opposite look for senior semi. I had never ever ever pictured myself in a black gown, especially one with a nonexistent back. It just was not me. One of my best friends ended up wearing a green gown with a succulent crown that made her look like a fairy (her mom is a crazy talented florist) and we laughed the whole night about how we must have switched dresses.

Excuse the pose, it was a cross country thing 😉

I knew I wanted a more form fitting dress this time around, I had done mermaid and ball gown at this point although I was contemplating going back to mermaid. I also knew i wanted floor length. Since it was semi formal some girl opted for shorter dresses but in my head I was thinking you only have so many chances to wear a floor length dress.

After trying on a number of dresses I knew this was the one but I just kept thinking, “Really Marissa, a black dress?” but I knew I would regret it if I didn’t buy it. I remember the saleswoman gave me advice that helped me realize this definitely was the one. While it’s every girl’s nightmare to show up in the same dress as someone, you need to pick one that makes you so happy you wouldn’t even care. So the black dress it was.

Here is one of my all time favorite pictures of me and my best friend Clara.

I’ll leave you with a funny story before I sign off. Two weeks before senior semi was senior skip day. I was someone who always had perfect attendance but I’m also someone who will not pass up a trip to the Cape so I skipped school. It was cloudy out so after putting on sunscreen in the morning I never thought to put it back on later in the day. While we were all sun bathing I remember thinking “Oh I need to flip over so my back isn’t whiter than the rest of my body.” Worst. Mistake.  Ever. I got the worst sunburn of my entire life and it was only on my back! Up until that day I never believed people when they said cloudy days are the easiest to get a sunburn.

One week after senior skip day I had a dance competition… in my two piece costume which showed off my two skin tones, and the following week was senior semi with my open back dress which would reveal my red back.I have taken that as a lesson to never skip school again.

That was my first and only investment in tanning lotion and I do not regret a thing. It helped even me out but if you look closely you can still see my bathing suit line.

Honestly, if I could get an exact copy of this dress in white for my wedding I probably would.

Stay stylish!

A Cinderella Story

Prom season is quickly approaching which means it is time to go dress shopping. I wanted to share my junior prom and senior semi dresses with you guys because even though it has been 3-4 years, I am I always looking for an excuse to get dressed up and this will have to do.

I was lucky enough to be asked to go to prom as a sophomore and that year I experimented with what I liked. I had always seen myself in a ballgown so for my first prom I chose a coral dress and I did something really fancy with my fair.

For my from I wanted that classic look so I chose to do a high bun (my signature look in high school) and a big poofy dress.

If only I had know to take the seatbelt off because I would need this picture for a future blog post!

prom2Dressed and ready to go take pictures.

We are so lucky that we have a beautiful mansion in town that opens their doors so we can take pictures on the grounds and inside. I’m even luckier because I’ve volunteered there!

Off to dance the night away!

Photo booth fun!

After a long night of dancing and eating dessert at a dessert bar in town I was ready for bed.

It seems like the ballgown is not in style this year so I had a tough time finding exact matches but I found a few blue dresses along the same lines:

Navy Gown

Off the Shoulder Light Blue Gown

Beaded Gown

My biggest suggestion though is to go to consignment stores! Most of my formal dresses came from consignment stores!

Can’t wait to show you what my senior semi dress looked like! Hint it’s nothing like my first two…

Wellness Wednesday: Hiking

Today’s Wellness Wednesday is all about getting outside! One of my friends and I have made the goal of going out every Sunday morning and walking around. This is something we used to do with both of our families and we thought it would fun to do around here.

Here is my list of places to go in Western MA and Central MA:

  1. Mount Tom, Holyoke MA

It was my goal last year that I would go to Mt. Tom before the end of the school year. Three days before finals started we finally made it out there and it was so worth it! Since Mt. Tom is not too far from where I go to school it’s kinda one of those “Do you even go here if you haven’t been to the America rock?” things. If you’re looking to go and you want to make it to the America rock park your car at Mt. Joe to Go in Holyoke and tae the trail right across the street! Just a warning, part of the trail to get there is steep. There are other trails that are more moderate. I’m counting down the days until the snow is gone so I can go back!

  2. Robinson State Park, Agawam/Feeding Hills MA

This isn’t a mountain but the views are so beautiful! I went there two weeks ago and it was such a nice spot. My favorite thing was looking out over the Westfield River. We were there for 2 hours and mainly stayed on the green trail but you could easily spend hours walking around all the different trails.
  3. Up next is Wachusett Mountain, Princeton/Westminster MA. There was a point in time where my family would go to Wachusett Mountain every weekend to walk. The Pine Hill Trail is the easiest to go up but there are so many other paths too, you can also go up just the ski trails or take the road. My favorite time I went walking there was in 2008 after we had a really bad ice storm. We walked up the road and there were tried with branches iced to the ground. It was such an unreal sight, it looked like we were in a movie. Fun fact I went to Junior Ranger Camp there and years later I had my junior prom there!

Here is a list of other places to go in Western MA. These were all posted in my school’s Wellness Complex and are on my list of places to go:

  • Bare Mountain, Amherst MA (moderate)
  • Mount Sugarloaf, South Deerfield MA (difficult)
  • Mount Holyoke, Hadley MA (difficult)

What I’m Reading: The Magnolia Story

If you love Fixer Upper you will adore The Magnolia Story.

The unique thing about this book is that it is mainly in Joanna’s voice and they use a different font for when Chip jumps in. That was probably my favorite part of the book, it felt just like what they come across as on their show. Their book has the same voice that they have when they are on TV. Although they had Mark Dagostino help them, you can tell they were very active in this process.

Something that may surprise you, it certainly surprised me, was that life has not always been smooth sailing for the Gaines. They’ve had a bumpy road that only makes you root for them even more. They stay true to their values when they’re thriving and when they’re surviving.

I was also surprised by how many business ventures Chip has been on. Reading Capital Gaines is definitely on my to do list.

This book definitely wants to make you move down south, flip houses, and live on a farm  without a TV. Chip and Joanna make life seem fun. Even when they were at low points they found ways to make it work and enjoy the process.

While I was in the middle of the book they announced that they are having a 5th kid! While I’m disappointed they are taking a break from Fixer Upper I’m excited to see what new things are coming for Magnolia.

If you need a book to keep you entertained during the Fixer Upper hiatus, The Magnolia Story is your next read!

Happy reading!

This skirt has all the details! From the scallops to the pattern and even small jewels at the bottom, this has it all.
