Wellness Wednesday: Meditation

Happy Wednesday! Today I’m going to be talking about the benefits of meditation and sharing some links to meditations that I have used in the past.

I think meditation is so beneficial but sometimes it’s hard to sit down and forget everything on your to do list. To me, it’s similar to yoga in that I always feel better after I do it but it’s sitting down to actually do it that’s the hard part. Sometimes I think why would I put off finishing all of these things that are stressing me out when I could simply just do those things now.

Here’s misconception #1 meditation can be as long as you need it to be! I will be linking 15, 30, and 60 minute options but there are so many more out there! You don’t need to sit clear an hour of your day to do meditation. You can also meditate anywhere! Meditation is a form of mental exercise you can take with you everywhere.

The following information is from this Mayo Clinic article:

  • Meditation helps you focus on the present.
  • Meditation helps increase patience.
  • Meditation increases self awareness.
  • Meditation can help medical conditions like anxiety, asthma, depression, high blood pressure, sleeping problems, and tension headaches.

Here are the types of meditation out there:

  • Guided meditation: This is the type of meditation I am most familiar with. Of the different types of guided meditation I am most familiar with the ones that talk you through bringing awareness to different body parts or the ones that have you visualize a relaxing scene.
  • Mantra meditation: This is when you repeat a word or phrase in your head or outlaid for a period of time.
  • Mindfulness meditation: This is a type of meditation that focuses on being in the moment.
  • Qi gong: this is a type of traditional Chinese meditation that that combines meditation, physical movement, and bringing awareness to our thoughts and breath.
  • Tai Chi; I took this type of meditation as a physical education class for school and it was so much fun! Tai Chi is another way to connect mindfulness and breath with movement.  I learned Tai Chi Chuan which incorporates a sword into the mix. This is also a great way to improve balance.

Here are some resources for you guys to try your hand at mediation:

Guided Meditation  & To End Your Day: from the creator of the Pilates Challenge. She also has a meditation challenge that I will be trying soon! Both of these are around 15 minutes.

Silva Meditation: about 30 minutes long, just a heads up… I have never made it to the end of this one!

Tai Chi: here is a beginning Tai Chi lesson. The whole video is around 10 minutes but once you learn it it should only take 5, unless you chose to repeat it.

Choosing Mantras: this is a short clip that teaches you a little more about picking mantras.

Stay relaxed!

My Study Tips

College is different than high school in so many ways, one of the biggest differences is in study habits. In high school I procrastinated, I mean who doesn’t. In college my motto is to stay ahead of the game. I always start working on assignments as soon as I get them because you’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again: cramming doesn’t work! Even if you cram and are able to get an A on your assignment I doubt you’ll be able to recall that information in the future.

Actually learn it…

This is a continuation of the cramming idea, learning the material makes your life so much easier. I’m going to school to become a physical therapist. Part of our curriculum is human anatomy and physiology as undergrads and then clinical anatomy as grad students. human A&P is much like clinical in that in the fall semester you have two practicals: one of bones and one on muscles. The clinical one is a little more in depth but it’s not like the names of the bones change. One of the biggest reasons I started weeks in advance studying for my practicals last year because this is information I’m going to need for the rest of my life. Who wants a physical therapist that has no idea what muscles attach to which bones? All that studying will also pay off when it comes time for me to take clinical anatomy, I won’t have to waste time relearning all the origins and insertions, I’ll just have to do a little recall.

Study as if you have a cheat sheet…

If you had one piece of paper to take with you into a test what would you put on it. I think this is such a great way to study because it gets you to look at the key ideas as well as the things you don’t know as well. I would advise you to make this sheet a few days in advance so that in addition to studying your notes you have a simplified version you can take with you and glance at in between classes.

Make flashcards…

I know this one isn’t for everyone but I love flashcards. They’re great for learning vocabulary words and they are also super easy to carry around with you for studying in between classes.

Apply it to your life…

This is one that I’m going to relate to anatomy as well. Sometimes if I could not remember what a muscle did for the life of me I would think of a dance move that fit with that muscle’s action. The most memorable one I used was that the sartorius muscle in the muscle used for figure 4s (a stretch we did when I ran cross country/track in high school) or a pirouette in dance.

Good luck with exams!

J. Crew Factory just released new spring clothes so here is a round up of some of my favorites!

Chambray Ruffle Tie Sleeve Dress

I fell in love with tie sleeves when I first started seeing them last fall and I am so happy they are here to stay! I also love the chambray and I think it’s perfect for the transition from winter to spring.

Here are some cute earrings from BaubleBar that would look great with this dress! I love the lavender for spring but I think the gold would also look great!

End on End Ruffle Front Tank Top

Screen Shot 2018-03-05 at 9.45.51 AM

This shirt comes in navy and light blue and it another great transition piece. You can wear it with a cardigan on those colder days and then once it gets a little warmer you can leave the sweater at home! This look wouldn’t be complete without pearl earrings and big sunglasses!

Scalloped Sidewalk Skirt

Screen Shot 2018-03-05 at 12.15.44 PM.png

I didn’t know I needed this in my life but now I can’t live without it! The sidewalk skirt is my favorite J. Crew  piece and now there are scallops! I need this green color and it also comes in black, red, and blue. This skirt would also look so cute with these wedges from DSW:

Scalloped Cami

Sticking with the scallop theme how cute is this top?! I love the simple detail on the top and think it’s perfect for that put together look. This top comes in so many colors: lavender, white, mint, pink, and blue, but the pink and blue are almost gone so act fast! If you’re looking for shoes to wear with this cami those wedges above also come in black!

Tie Front Wrap

This shirt takes me back to the ballet days! It also comes in gray and black but I definitely prefer the pink! If you’re looking for shoes to go with this top definitely pick out some flats that tie at the ankle. This is a pair from Vince Camuto that I really love!

Bow Neck Sweater

If you don’t love this sweater you’re crazy! I think it is so cute and I had to include it once I saw it was back in stock! And it would look fabulous with the Vince Camuto flats!!

That’s all for today! Stay stylish!

A Day on the Vineyard

One of my favorite places is the Vineyard so I wanted to share all my favorite things with you guys!

We usually Take the Island Queen from Falmouth so our first stop is looking at all the shops in Oak Bluffs.

This yellow dress is from J. Crew.  I got it from a consignment store but there are tons on Poshmark if you search J. Crew yellow dress. Use code MARISSAMOQ to get $5 added to your account when you sign up for Poshmark.

This dress is from Vineyard Vines! Here is the link to the dress on Poshmark but just a warning this dress wrinkles easily!

After getting a donut at Back Door Donuts we stop by Vineyard Vines. We probably spend more time outside playing corn hole than we do looking inside!

One of my favorite activities is picking out which house I’ll buy one day… This one is definitely in the running! You can also find the Gingerbread Cottages in Oak Bluffs. It’s a neat place to walk around and you can even tour one!

Then we wind up in Edgartown. I usually stop by the Vineyard Vines in Edgartown too. I always stop in the Lilly store to try stuff on because we usually go right before the APS. This past visit I ended up buying something full price! It was just too cute to pass up.

For lunch we went to the Seafood Shanty. It’s right on the water and you can see the Chappy ferry go back and forth and back and forth and back and forth (it’s a 527ft ride!).

My bathing suit is from Vineyard Vines and my cover up is my first ever Lilly purchase from the APS sale in 2015! I couldn’t find a similar one  but they still have tons of beautiful ones on their website!

Then I took a leap of faith of Jaws bridge. It took me forever to get on the rail but it was so much fun! If you’re planning on jumping and you aren’t a D1 gymnast make sure to bring two friends- one to take your picture and one to help you get up!

I don’t know about you but I’m dreaming of summer!

How could I not write about Lilly this week when Lilly swim just came out! Right now it’s  40 degrees and rainy but as Lilly said, “Not always sunny, but always in a sunny state of mind.”

IMG_5483

The first Lilly I bought from the APS was a swim coverup so I was so excited to find out Lilly swim was back!

The first piece I am obsessed with is the Cay Twist Bandeau

Screen Shot 2018-02-24 at 4.04.41 PM

My favorite pattern is Multi Catch The Wave but Twilight Blue Gypsea is also gorgeous and I don’t think you can go wrong either way! You can find the matching bottoms here. Another options for bottoms are here and they have a little bit of a wider band.

Ginette Coverup

Screen Shot 2018-02-24 at 4.10.41 PM

This coverup is adorable! The pattern and the fringe make it so fun and it also looks cool!

And for towels you have the Circa Round Beach Towel

Screen Shot 2018-02-24 at 4.13.36 PM

This looks like the perfect spot to curl up and read a book all day!

And what else would you use to carry all your stuff to the beach besides the Destination Beach Tote

Screen Shot 2018-02-24 at 4.16.29 PM

This bag comes in tons of fun destinations like Naples, Sarasota, and Key West but how could you not pick where it all started!

Let me know you you will be mixing and matching all these fun prints on your way to the beach!

Stay stylish!
