Spring Jackets

I still haven’t been in one of the igloos but it’s on my bucket list!

It’s might be snowing today but spring is just around the corner! And with that I wanted to round up some cute jackets that will keep you warm as we transition into spring.

I’ve been eyeing these coats for awhile now and it just so happened it came in my mom’s StitchFix box last month. So naturally I had to wear it every chance I got until I went back to school. Market & Spruce is exclusive to Stitch Fix but it’s worth shopping around Poshmark and Mercari as they have a few items.

Since it is nearing the end of the season I wanted to do a round up of transition jackets because I’ve been seeing a ton of sales lately!

First up: Eddie Bauer

Mackenzie Trench Coat

The Mackenzie Trench Coat is only $80 right now! While that may be a little expensive for all the college girls out there, it’s usually $200 and you can wear it all spring and fall! It’s waterproof and you can fit medium-sized layers underneath it. Not to mention the fit is super cute!

Up next: North Face

Venture 2

Remember in junior high/high school when everyone had the exact same North Face? While I haven’t tried this jacket on, my North Face lasted me all the way to my sophomore year so I’m assuming the quality on this one is just as good. The black is definitely my favorite option, but it also comes in a few colors like blue, turquoise, and a light purple. Right now it’s only $70 so act fast before it goes back up to $100!

Field Jacket: LL Bean

The signature Field Jacket

Another jacket that is on sale right now! Normally this is $159 but currently it’s $55. I love how this one is the classic field jacket style and is a little fitted at the waist. Even though it’s fitted make sure you check the sizing chart because people have reported it being a little bigger than they expected.

Hope this keeps you warm!

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

It’s the Monday after Thanksgiving and you know what that means… Christmas is in full swing! All those people that wait until Thanksgiving are finally on board and it’s full steam ahead.

I wanted to share three holiday looks you can recreate for holiday parties or Christmas dinner.

A Night at the Nutcracker

Similar sweater. Similar skirt. Houndstooth coat. Nutcracker pouch.

A majority of this outfit is something you can find in your closet! If you have a neutral sweater and skirt combo all you need to invest in is a purse, and even though it’s something I only use once a year, it was a great investment.

Pretty in Plaid

Red plaid dress. Short sleeve plaid dress.

Plaid is such a great holiday pattern. These dresses would be perfect for a Christmas Eve party. The LL Bean boots give it a real New England look!

Sweater Weather

Ribbed cowl neck sweater dress. Cable knit sweater dress.

The first dress linked has the fun cowl neck while the second one comes in a great holiday red! My favorite part of this outfit was that my earrings had little bows on them! Kate Spade has cute bow studs, but I got my drop earrings from Charming Charlie (same place as my Nutcracker purse). If you’re like me and loved accessorizing from Charming Charlie, I have good news for you- they’re coming back! As for your Christmas look, I’ll give you bonus points if you coordinate with your dog!

I hope this helped give you some ideas on what to wear this holiday season. Let me know what you’re wearing in the comments below!

Fall Transitions

Long Sleeve Artist Tee from J. Crew Factory
Scalloped Sidewalk Skirt from J. Crew Factory. The J. Crew website didn’t have this color so I linked it through Amazon.

This time of year is so hard! I want fall to be in full swing already but it gets so hot by mid-afternoon I would die of heat stroke if I walked home from school in my sweater and bean boots combo. Which is why I’m here to tell you about the best fall transition outfit: a skirt and long sleeve top!

I have J. Crew Sidewalk skirts in so many colors but I love the scallops on this one (thanks Mom!). And it pairs so nicely with my “pumpkin spice” shirt! This color wasn’t available on the website but they did have a nice navy striped shirt that would be perfect for fall. Since I was on the Cape (not quite but almost across the bridge) in this photo I opted for sandals to make it a little more summery.

Ignore my hair, I had just ran a 10K.

Practically the same look but I swapped out the sandals for ballet flats. I picked out a different Sidewalk Skirt (J. Crew Factory didn’t have this color on their website but I found a ton on Poshmark!) and a black sweater from Banana Republic Factory. This sweater is from a a few years ago but here is a similar one!

Who doesn’t go pumpkin picking with out their pearls?

And now we’ve broken out the tall boots. This is the same sweater from above with a skirt from Loft that I bought at a consignment store. This isn’t the same skirt, but I love the buffalo plaid!

You don’t have to pull out all the heavy duty sweaters just yet but here are some colors to incorporate into your outfits to start the transition to fall:

  • Navy
  • Gold
  • Mustard Yellow
  • Deep Reds
  • Burnt Oranges
  • Black

And you don’t need to go shopping for a whole new wardrobe! Look at what you have and see how versatile it can be. Changing up the pants/skirt/necklaces you wear with a sweater can give it a whole new look!

Let me know your favorite fall trends in the comments!

Make a Statement

pineapple earrings
The cutest pineapple earrings from SUGARFIX by BaubleBar. You can find them here.

Hello friends!

Before we get into today’s style post I just wanted to share something exciting: today is the second anniversary of Sunflowers & Seersucker! While my first blog post went live on August 28th, today is the day I created an Instagram and started sharing on my corner of the Internet! If you have any fun ideas for posts on the 28th let me know!

Statement earrings are always a good idea. While I tend to wear pearls every day, I also don’t shy away from the fact that sometimes you need to grab attention. And while pearls complete most looks, sometimes you just need something flashy.

Today I’m sharing my favorite SUGARFIX earrings because while I love BaubleBar, I am definitely balling on a budget. You can click on any of the pictures to be brought to Target’s website.

palmetto earrings

Nothing screams summer quite like palmettos which makes these a great summer earring. Whether you’re vacationing in the tropics or trying to bring the sunshine to you, these are a must. They also have a cute blush pink which really brings out the heart shape.

lobster earrings

I may just be the only New Englander who doesn’t like lobster rolls but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate these earrings. If you’ll be spending anytime on the Cape, in Maine, or anywhere in between this summer you’ll probably want to add these to your cart.

beach themed hoops

Palm Beach anyone? The bright colors and seashells make these a must for a tropical vacation! My favorite touch is definitely the starfish.

bright fringe earrings

If you’re looking for something bold, look no further. These fringe earrings are perfect to add a pop of color to any look. They also come in lilac and black if you’re looking for something more subdued. While they are a little more laid back in color, they still add the perfect finishing touch.

Let me know which pair is your favorite!

Stay stylish!

The Teal Sweater

You probably recognize this sweater from every photo I posted around Spring Break. What started as a cute sweater at my favorite consignment store on the Cape turned into a lifesaver in Florida.

It was the perfect sweater for the transition into spring.

We left the Cape and headed straight to the airport to visit my cousin in Florida. We’ve only been to Florida at the end of August so we were not prepared for the weather that was about to hit us when we reached MCO.

Who knew Florida could be so cold?!

I had packed these ears to wear with the matching dress but it was rainy and cold. It probably would have felt warmer if it was cold at home but the weather in Florida and the weather in Massachusetts was pretty much the same.

Meet me at the boardwalk

The next day we went to Animal Kingdom to see my cousin at work and it was sunny! So I went for the cropped leggings that somehow matched my new sweater. I threw on an orange tank top underneath and halfway through the day I was able to take off the sweater and feel like I was actually in the Sunshine State.

On our last two days there the weather had finally warmed up and the sweater was left in the room. I did keep with the teal trend though.

Stay stylish!

A Very Lilly Graduation Weekend

Hey hey hey! It’s my first post as a college graduate! I wanted to share what I wore for some last minute ideas for anyone heading to a graduation in June.

Up first is Baccalaureate. At our school Baccalaureate is a senior run program and it’s a chance for students in our class to reflect on their experience at school. At first I didn’t even think I needed to pick out an outfit for Baccalaureate because I was going to be dancing in it.

Oh hey look it’s Allison from peoniesandpilates

As much as I loved the purple costumes, it didn’t look quite right hanging out of the bottom of our robes so I picked another purple dress.

All Lilly everything

I was actually about to put on a black dress and then I realized I had the unique opportunity of getting my grad cap to match my dress.

A grad cap decorating post is coming soon!

While my dress isn’t available on the Lilly website anymore, I have linked a similar style here. The Mila shift is a little more form fitting than the dress I wore but it has the bows on the side!

Embellished Amber Lynn Sandal

On to graduation!

For graduation I wore the same white Lilly I wore when I graduated high school. In high school our robes were white so we pretty much had to go with a white dress but I thought it was just such a perfect dress that I had to wear it again.

The only problem? I’ve only worn it a handful of times since then but it actually started to yellow a little bit. The only thing I could think of to fix it was OxiClean, I kept hearing Billy Mays telling me it was the only way to whiten my dress and he was right! After two washes it was back to white!

The Lilly shoes made another appearance

I have linked two different white Lillys here. The first is the Aliza Midi dress, and it has very similar lace. The Maya Shift dress is also lace and it has the nicest neckline.

Let me know what you are wearing to graduation in the comments!

A Preppy Penny: A Casual Valentine’s Day

Happy Monday!

Strolling in with my best Valentine’s Day ideas!

If you’re going for more of a casual look, this is for you! One of the best things ways to save money when building your wardrobe is to have some go-tos that you can add statement pieces to, to make it different every time you wear it.

The big statement piece here is the pink coat! Mine (technically it’s my mom’s!) is from Old Navy and while they don’t have the same exact one right now, they still have a very nice pink one!

Find the pink coat here on Old Navy’s website and it’s on sale for $45! This photo is not mine, it belongs to Old Navy!

So what else, you can’t go really go out without anything underneath!

I wore simple dark wash jeans and I paired it with a gray sweater.

I’m going to skip over the jeans, I’m sure you all have jeans at home (dark wash isn’t necessary!). I’m going to skip over the sweater as well because I’m sure you can find this in your closet as well! I would suggest going with a neutral like gray, black, or cream!

You’re also going to need a statement necklace! I’m wearing my favorite one from J. Crew Factory.

The layered circle necklace from J. Crew Factory. It’s on sale for $20 right now! Photo belongs to J. Crew Factory!

The last must have is a simple black purse. I worked at DSW the summer before I went away to college and it’s such a great place to get purses! Kelly & Katie is one of my favorite brands for shoes and purses!

The Kelly & Katie Artemisio Crossbody is on sale for $30! The photo belongs to DSW.

And the last thing: just break out your favorite boots! Whether their higher or ankle booties, they tie this look together!

Stay stylish!

A Preppy Penny: A Dressy Valentine’s Day

Alright ladies it’s time to break out the LBDs. In true “ballin’ on a budget” style, we’re using your go-to black dress for a night on the town.

If you didn’t know, I work at Banana Republic Factory Store and I love my job! The people I work with are great and the discounts are so helpful! I was working one of the markdown shifts last summer and as soon as I finished all my work I put this on hold.

One of the ways to get clothes on a budget is take advantage of factory stores! They often have the same quality clothes for much cheaper!

The best part of this outfit is that everything I’m wearing I already had (or borrowed from my mom’s closet!) But, while my grandmother taught me everyone should have a LBD I have linked some below incase you need to invest!

Here is the link for the first dress: cute off-the-shoulder This one is much similar to the one I chose to wear and it is $49 at Lulu’s.

Here is the link for the second dress: little black dress- scalloped dress I love the scalloped details on this one, it’s os fun! This one also comes from Lulu’s and is $46. Neither of these photos are mine they come from Lulu’s website!

While both of these are on the more expensive side, I like to look at thing in how many hours at Banana it’s worth and both of these dresses come in at about 4 hours, but they are dresses you can wear again and again. They’re also more expense because they’re made in the U.S.! I’m working on a post really soon about the importance of being mindful while shopping and paying attention to who made your clothes!

To all my high school/college girls: you get an extra 20% off at Lulu’s. Another huge way to save money: flash that student ID! So many retailers will give you a discount for being in school. Always be on the search for discounts, one I just learned about the other day- all restraints at the mall I work at give 10% to employees who work at the plaza. There’s a discount out there for everything you just have to find it!

Accessorizing is always a must! I went with my classic pearls and two pearl bracelets I got from Claire’s forever ago!

And if you’re from New England you’re going to need a coat!

This is the same coat I wrote about in my dressed down Valentine’s Day post. While Old Navy doesn’t have the same exact coat they have a very similar one you can find here on their website and it’s on sale for $45!

Last but not least: the shoes.

Now shoes are definitely my weakness, my first part time job was at DSW and I bought so many shoes while I was there. These shoes are anything but cheap, they’re from Lilly Pulitzer and I’m so lucky my Nana, my mom, and a $25 off coupon helped fund them. Graduation here we come!

Here is a link to the embellished Amber Lynn sandals.

Here is a link to similar, and way more affordable pair from Indigo Rd. called the Sadie Sandal. They’re on sale at DSW right now for $30! The photo below is from DSW’s website!

Well that’s all I have for you! Have a happy Valentine’s Day! I can’t wait to see what you all wore!

A Preppy Penny: Winter Staples

As much as I love searching through stores and picking out my favorite pieces to feature on Sunflowers and Seersucker I realized that’s just not me! In the new year I want to continue blogging and make sure what I put out is the most authentic me possible. That being said, I’m a college student so while I can dream about having a separate closet for all my shoes right now I’m finding the most versatile pieces at the best bargain.

So welcome to my newest fashion series: A Preppy Penny! This series is all about ballin’ on a budget and being fashionable frugal. One of my favorite ways to shop for clothes is by going to consignment stores, I’d like to thank my mom for introducing me to consignment stores because they’ve been a treasure hunt ever since. Since you never know what they are going to have, the trick to consignment stores is finding ones that take in your style. My favorite stores are on the Cape as you can always find Lilly there! For this series I’m going to be searching online for clothes I can share the best deals with you but I encourage you to start looking in consignment stores!

Without further ado… today’s outfit:

You’ve definitely seen this photo before but I love it! My jacket (Gap) and skirt (Loft) were from consignment stores but my sweater is from Banana Republic Factory.

I found a white sweater similar to mine from New York & Co. It’s on sale right now so it’s only $20!

While I couldn’t find a skirt exactly like mine J. Crew Factory had a similar grey and black plaid one for only $24.

Last but not least is the coat! My best suggestion for finding the best price would be to search black tweed coat on Poshmark. I found quite a few for as low as $25-30! I found a similar long coat from

. This is a little more expensive but in my opinion, but it’s important to invest in a good coat because you’ll wear it every day.

One last look at the final product!

Happy shopping! Let me know what good deals you find!
