Wellness Wednesday: Plant Based PVD

Happy Wednesday!

Today’s Wellness Wednesday is going to be all about a really cool restaurant I went to a few weeks ago: Plant City PVD. I recently became a vegetarian (I gave up meat for Lent and then just never went back) and so I’m always looking for new alternatives. While a plant-based diet is not for everyone, there are definitely some health benefits to eating less meat when it comes to heart disease and diabetes. Just being conscious of how much or what kind of meat you have can improve your risk of certain diseases. Click here to learn about a flexitarian diet.

I saw Plant City PVD while I was looking around the Providence Flea and I was intrigued. I was even a little confused on whether “plant-based” meant the whole place was vegetarian. They have a market, a coffee counter, a burger restaurant, a Mexican restaurant, and an Italian restaurant all wrapped into one. We decided on Italian and I really wanted to get the meatballs but I still had no idea if plant-based meant plants-only. When the waitress came back she told us everything in the building was vegan! Can you imagine?!

So good!

And so I ordered the meatballs! I will definitely be heading back to Providence to get it again, although next time I’m trying the pepperoni pizza! So if you’re in the Ocean State and looking to try something new you need to try Plant City.

You have my word, even though they don’t use quotes on the menu, everything is vegan!

Bonus points for any place that has cute signs in the bathroom!

A Preppy Penny: Winter Staples

As much as I love searching through stores and picking out my favorite pieces to feature on Sunflowers and Seersucker I realized that’s just not me! In the new year I want to continue blogging and make sure what I put out is the most authentic me possible. That being said, I’m a college student so while I can dream about having a separate closet for all my shoes right now I’m finding the most versatile pieces at the best bargain.

So welcome to my newest fashion series: A Preppy Penny! This series is all about ballin’ on a budget and being fashionable frugal. One of my favorite ways to shop for clothes is by going to consignment stores, I’d like to thank my mom for introducing me to consignment stores because they’ve been a treasure hunt ever since. Since you never know what they are going to have, the trick to consignment stores is finding ones that take in your style. My favorite stores are on the Cape as you can always find Lilly there! For this series I’m going to be searching online for clothes I can share the best deals with you but I encourage you to start looking in consignment stores!

Without further ado… today’s outfit:

You’ve definitely seen this photo before but I love it! My jacket (Gap) and skirt (Loft) were from consignment stores but my sweater is from Banana Republic Factory.

I found a white sweater similar to mine from New York & Co. It’s on sale right now so it’s only $20!

While I couldn’t find a skirt exactly like mine J. Crew Factory had a similar grey and black plaid one for only $24.

Last but not least is the coat! My best suggestion for finding the best price would be to search black tweed coat on Poshmark. I found quite a few for as low as $25-30! I found a similar long coat from

. This is a little more expensive but in my opinion, but it’s important to invest in a good coat because you’ll wear it every day.

One last look at the final product!

Happy shopping! Let me know what good deals you find!

Disney: Epcot

IMG_3272

Another day another guide to a Disney Park!

This week I’m focusing on Epcot, the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. I’ve always loved Epcot because it’s such a cool concept, when you walk in you are in Future World and then you can travel the world through 11 different pavilions. Here is the link to some Epcot music if you really want to get in the spirit!

What to Ride

  • Test Track: I’m still unsure if the new Test Track is as good as the old one but this is still a ride you cannot miss. While the old preshow is gone you can enjoy  it here. The new Test Track is sponsored by Chevrolet and looks like something out of Tron. One of the coolest things about the new version is that you get to design your own car! My tip for Test Track is to take the single rider line, you have to miss some of the interactive elements but it can save you so much time! The cars fit 6 people so all the families of 4/5need single riders to fill seats. Of all the single rider lines at Disney I find this one the most efficient, my family of 3 has gone on the single rider line and 2 of us have even ended up in the same car. One last fun fact about Test Track, the outside turns are banked at 50 degrees while Daytona’s Speedway is only 31!
  • Soarin’: I actually can’t speak too much to this ride. While I adored the old Soarin’ it has since been updated to be Soarin’ Around the World. If the new ride is anything like the California version I can’t wait to see it! Here’s a fun fact about the old Soarin’: the year before it opened in Florida our Disney World vacation was changed to a Disneyland vacation due to a hurricane (after lots of hard work from my Dad) and so I got to ride it just before it opened in EPCOT and it has been one of my family’s favorites ever since.
  • Living with the Land: this is a nice boat ride through the Epcot greenhouses where you can see Mickey shaped pumpkins earning their ears! While this isn’t a thrill ride it’s a nice way to break up your day!
  • Journey Into Imagination: My Dad would probably kill me if he saw I put this on my list and didn’t include Mission: SPACE but the theme song is so catchy! And who doesn’t love Figment!
  • Gran Fiesta Tour: A boat ride  that follows the three Caballeros in a journey around Mexico. While it’s very similar to It’s A Small World you have to go see it and find out what happens to Donald. It’s located inside the Mexico Pavilion which is a breathtaking indoor Mexican market!
  • Frozen Ever After: I can’t even write a review on this since I have not been on it since it was Maelstrom! While I’m excited to see the new ride I don’t think it will ever compare to the original!

Where to Eat

IMG_3303

When my family goes to Epcot we actually don’t usually plan to sit down and eat lunch. We’ve gotten breakfast at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall, I definitely recommend eating there it’s a great place to get all you can eat food and meet princesses! We’ve also eaten lunch at both the Nine Dragons restaurant and the Lotus Blossom quick service restaurant.

One thing I’ve done in the past is my own personal under 21 take on a beer in every country, where I got a dessert in every country. I didn’t quite get through all 11 and about halfway through I transitioned to getting a piece of chocolate in every country instead. My favorite place to grab a dessert is definitely the French bakery! If you’re looking for somewhere to sit after getting your pastry head into L’esprit de la Provence, the gift shop is amazing and has tables off to the side!

Extras

IMG_3327 2
You can meet princesses throughout the World Showcase. Here are Ariel and Eric at the International Gateway!

  • Club Cool: While I’m not a soda drinker I recommend stopping in to try the Beverly!
  • Pin Central: If you are big into pin trading you have stop by! They have all the collectable pins you could ever need!
  • A lot of people end up entering Epcot through Future World and then find themselves short on time when it comes time to enjoy the countries. If you want a foolproof way of making sure you don’t get distracted by all that Future World has to offer come in through the International Gateway. If you find yourself at any of the Epcot area hotels (Yacht Club, Beach Club, Boardwalk Inn, or the Swan and Dolphin) you are a short walk/boat ride away from this hidden entrance!
  • Jumping Fountains in Future World: try putting your arms out and letting the water go in between… can you make it go through just your hands?

My Top 4 Pavilions:

This is such a hard one but I have narrowed it down to Norway, France, Canada, and Morocco! I’m not too sure how Norway will hold up now that they have replaced the viking display and Maelstrom ride to become Frozen tributes but I’ll keep you updated on those. France has to make the list as I took five years of French in junior high and high school and it is so fun to see all the things I had learned about. One year my parents wouldn’t buy me a cream puff unless I ordered it in French! Canada has beautiful flowers and the best video, in my humble opinion. It stars Martin Short and has to be one of the funniest things in Epcot. The attention to detail goes down to having some buildings look like they are in French Canada and some take on more on an English Canada style. Last but not least is Morocco! The attention to detail in this one is astounding as well! Rumor has it that the king of Morocco actually sent his own designers to help create this area. Another fun fact about Morocco is that it is the only country that does not light up during IllumiNations because the tower is a prayer tower and doing so would violate Muslim beliefs. For more fun facts head over to Disney Fanatic.

Mum’s Top 4: Japan, Canada, Norway, and Mexico.

Dad’s Top 4: Japan, Canada, China, and Norway. He gives an honorable mention to Mexico even though it is dark.

Honorable Mention

  • The English gardens: tucked away behind the stores and the Winnie the Pooh meet and greet is a nice place to relax and possibly catch the Beatles tribute band, the British Invasion.
  • The Japanese gift shop: a fun place to crack open an oyster for a pearl. It’s also a great place to grab crazy snacks to try. One of my favorite memories in that store is picking out crazy flavored snacks to bring home to my cousin Nick.
  • The Terracotta Army: inside one of the buildings in China is a replica of the Terracotta Army and it’s so cool to look at!
  • Street Performers: from the Chinese acrobats to the balancing act in France the street performers are always entertaining.

Have a magical day!

Disney: Magic Kingdom

IMG_3621

In a few short weeks I will be headed to the Most Magical Place on Earth! I wanted to share with you my own version of “Disney must dos” in the wise words of everyone’s favorite host, Stacey Aswad. If you want to put yourself even more in the Disney mood listen to this YouTube video!

What to Ride

Arguably one of the most important things to do when in Disney. Here are the rides you absolutely cannot miss:

  • The Jungle Cruise: a Disney classic! You cannot miss the chance to take a ride along the rivers of Asia, Africa, and South America, I promise you’ll be quoting the jokes for the rest of your stay.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: another classic that would be a shame to miss! My favorite thing about this ride is spotting Jack Sparrow.
  • “Triple Mountain Whammy”: this is another Stacey-ism that refers to Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad! It’s so hard to pick a favorite because they’re all so different but if I had to pick I would choose Space Mountain.
  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train: this had just opened last time I went to Disney and it was so worth the wait! It is 100% worth the FastPasses if you chose to use them on this ride. The way they designed the cars allows you to actually swing them!
  • Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: while this isn’t a thrill ride I would say it’s worth your time if the wait isn’t too long! With the new Christopher Robin movie coming out I feel like this will be pretty popular when I get there but it is always fun to find yourself in the land of Heffalumps and Woozles.
  • It’s A Small World: disclaimer: after riding It’s a Small World this song will get stuck in your head at any moment for the rest of your life, and once it’s there it’s hard to get it out. That being said, it’s totally worth it!!
  • Haunted Mansion: this is a ride where the details really stand out to me. I know Disney puts this much attention to every attraction they have but there’s just something about this ride that gets me. Make sure you take a peak at the gravestones as you are waiting in line, they’re quite entertaining. And don’t be afraid of your host, your ghost host, he’s just Paul Frees- the voice of the Pillsbury Doughboy.
  • The Liberty Square Riverboat: not my personal favorite as I’d rather be riding rollercoasters but I had to include this for Mum! This year she may not find it as relaxing as I’ll be asking her to take my blog photos while we’re on it 😉 There is one thing I love about the Riverboat though- if you go to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party they dock the boat and you can see grave keeper/zombie figures looming around the boat.
  • Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin: I am awful at this attraction! I cannot hit anything for my life, which just gets worse when my Dad sits next to me and gets 999,999. I would recommend looking up which targets are high points before stepping on- here’s one: underneath Zurg in one of the final scenes!
  • Carousel of Progress: here’s another catchy theme to get stuck in your head: there’s a great big beautiful tomorrow shining at the end of every day! This attraction was featured at the World’s Fair and takes you through American history in an entertaining way.
  • Tomorrowland Transit Authority: paging Mr. Morrow, Mr. Tom Morrow, head on over to the TTA for a relaxing ride around Tomorrowland. This is another classic you absolutely should not miss!

IMG_3638

Where to Eat

  • Cinderella’s Royal Table: my insider tip is to go during one of the last reservations and then by the time you are done eating you can watch the fireworks from underneath the castle!
  • Crystal Palace: a fun buffet with Winnie the Pooh and friends! I’m sure they have great adult food there but I always go for the mac and cheese, corn dogs, and dessert.
  • Liberty Tree Tavern: they have great food and even better milkshakes!
  • Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe: definitely an under appreciated option! I usually get a burger and  you have the freedom to put whatever you want on it as there’s a topping bar. That may not be a big deal to some of you but a mentioned above I’m a picky eater so it’s easier to just put it on myself.
  • Aloha Isle: The home of the oh-so-famous Dole Whip. Even if you prefer chocolate ice cream over fruity ice cream you have to get one!

Here’s a picture from my iPod Touch circa 2011 of the fireworks under the Castle. It’s definitely worth it to wait until 9pm to eat dinner if you ask me!381402_335047186524217_1783441837_n

Extras

  • Look for hidden Mickeys! They are everywhere in the parks/hotels. In Fantasyland you can also look for hidden Pasquale’s.
  • Tom Sawyer Island: it’s not a ride but I could easily spend half a day over there exploring all of the caves!
  • Kingdom Keepers: a book series, definitely geared more towards kids but I remember reading when I was there and it was so fun to imagine the story unfolding in the park. From what I remember it makes you look at the park in a totally different way!
  • Don’t forget to meet some characters while you’re there. This photo is from when Rapunzel and I decided blondes do in fact have more fun.

IMG_3599

Here’s my last tip: if Disney gives you Extra Magic Hours use them!! One night during our last trip it was pouring and the park was open until 1 in the morning but we still had so much fun! Extra Magic Hours are just for people staying on the Disney Property so wait times are significantly lower. IMG_3415

I hope you enjoyed my whirlwind tour of Magic Kingdom! More parks will be coming soon!

Have a magical day!

Wellness Wednesday: Ab’asanas

IMG_9769
It’s been awhile since I shared a Wellness Wednesday post and I wanted to update you guys on one of my favorite workout routines: Ab’asanas.

Ab’asanas was created by Morgan, formerly known as The Southern Yogi, one of my absolute favorite Instagram yogis. It’s a series of exercises that incorporate yoga into your core workout. Some of you may be thinking, well yoga isn’t that hard but I promise you will sweat.

I have only done her first book (the expanded version) but since I am on the quest for a handstand I will be trying her second book soon! Her first book is a great introduction to yoga, if you’ve never tried yoga this is where you should start. Although I had been doing yoga for a year or so before I dove into Ab’asanas I still wanted to start with the first book because I was intimidated that some of the poses in book two, which is more geared toward prepping for inversions, would be too advanced for me. After getting the first book I was very happy with my decision because there were some moves that I struggled with. I felt so discouraged at first but as I kept working at it they came easier to me.

The thing I love the most about Ab’asanas however is that it’s adaptable. Being in class until 5 some days only gives me an hour at the gym (oh summer hours…) so I need to use my time wisely. I use the examples in the back as a template and typically do 5 exercises as a set and then depending on the time I have I will do anywhere from 3-5 sets.

I’ll keep you updated on my progress with book 2, once I get there!

If you’re looking for cute outfits to wear to the yoga studio check out my Pinterest board!

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

A few weeks ago (before I sold my soul to PT school), I took the train to Boston to enjoy one of my last days of freedom. I had never been there before but I had seen a photo of the courtyard on Pinterest and it was so beautiful! I have been to Boston sooo many times I found it hard to believe I had never been there before.

I had learned about the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in high school because there was a book (“The Gardner Heist: The True Story of the World’s Largest Unsolved Art Theft” by Ulrich Boser) on one of my summer reading lists. While I had picked a different book, every once in awhile I would try to remember the name of the museum that had paintings stolen that had never been recovered (more to come on that later). Then three years later I accidentally stumbled in when I found out college students can get in for $5.

Without further adieu here are some of the highlights of my trip

IMG_9517

Had to stop for Blackbird Doughnuts before I headed over! This time I tried the java berry donut, 10/10 would recommend.

After wandering through some of the Emerald Necklace parks I started heading toward the museum.

Following the death of her husband, Isabella Stewart Gardner opened a museum to showcase her extensive collection of art. She lived up on the fourth floor of this museum and in my opinion it looks like a regular building, so when I was looking around to figure out where I was supposed to going I completely missed it the first time.

After looking at a collection in the New Wing, I was confronted with the view I had come to see. Gardner’s “Inside Out” Venetian palazzo. I spent plenty of time just taking in that view as well as watching some people restoring a piece of the collection.

Pictured below is a piece of the woman herself. This picture was actually pretty controversial when it first appeared in the museum. IMG_9549

Two of the themes that I was fascinated by, and it appeared that Gardner was also fascinated by were the dancers and the Christian pieces. I forget if this was a Degas painting but there were a few of Degas’s dancers scattered throughout the museum. They also had quite a few religious pieces and the stain glass absolutely mesmerized me.

The science lover in me really appreciated this one…IMG_9543

Then, I spent sometime in the garden outside reading. (Go take a look at my review of Summer at Tiffany)

Here’s the showstopper…

IMG_9551This is one of the thirteen empty frames in the museum. Once a piece entered Gardner’s collection it stayed there. Keeping with her tradition of collecting art, the museum keeps the frames as placeholders.

And just one more picture of the courtyard!
IMG_9561

If you are ever in Boston and looking for something to do, I would definitely head here! It’s such a beautiful place and it’s easy to spend hours wandering through the rooms. I want to keep some element of surprise so I didn’t talk about the layout of the museum but it’s very intriguing!

Forever Young: Chocolate Buffet

If you’re looking for a fun thing to do some Saturday morning in Boston go check out the Langham’s Chocolate Buffet. It runs every year from September to June and it has become a “welcome back from school” tradition for my mom and I. The first time we went was after I got back from my freshman year of college and we just keep going back!

IMG_9429

Here’s a photo of my first plate! For my first round I grabbed a donut from the donut wall, cake pops, and chocolate mousse.  I also took a mug of the chocolate soup- my favorite thing they bring back year after year!

IMG_9448

For the next round I stopped by the crepe station and dipped some fruit and cake in the chocolate fountain.

IMG_9450

This is another one of my favorite chocolate buffet staples! It may seem like you can get cookies and milk anywhere but drinking out of the bottle is so much fun!

Here are some of the desserts that match the theme: their version of Pop-tarts and and cereal and milk.

IMG_9789

If you’re more of an ice cream person check out this topping bar!

If you love dessert I would definitely recommend stopping by the chocolate bar next time you’re in Boston!  Let me know what your favorite dessert is in the comments below!

A Cinderella Story

Prom season is quickly approaching which means it is time to go dress shopping. I wanted to share my junior prom and senior semi dresses with you guys because even though it has been 3-4 years, I am I always looking for an excuse to get dressed up and this will have to do.

I was lucky enough to be asked to go to prom as a sophomore and that year I experimented with what I liked. I had always seen myself in a ballgown so for my first prom I chose a coral dress and I did something really fancy with my fair.

For my from I wanted that classic look so I chose to do a high bun (my signature look in high school) and a big poofy dress.

prom

If only I had know to take the seatbelt off because I would need this picture for a future blog post!

prom2Dressed and ready to go take pictures.

We are so lucky that we have a beautiful mansion in town that opens their doors so we can take pictures on the grounds and inside. I’m even luckier because I’ve volunteered there!

prom8

Off to dance the night away!

prom6

Photo booth fun!

prom7

After a long night of dancing and eating dessert at a dessert bar in town I was ready for bed.

It seems like the ballgown is not in style this year so I had a tough time finding exact matches but I found a few blue dresses along the same lines:

Navy Gown

Off the Shoulder Light Blue Gown

Beaded Gown

My biggest suggestion though is to go to consignment stores! Most of my formal dresses came from consignment stores!

Can’t wait to show you what my senior semi dress looked like! Hint it’s nothing like my first two…

The Women’s March

IMG_2903On January 20th I attended my second Women’s March. Last year when I heard our school was sending a bus to Boston to attend the Women’s March I was hesitant. I was not sure I should even be going, I was still questioning whether or not I even considered calling myself a feminist. I mean I have never gone out in public without a bra let alone burn one…

At the end of my freshman year I joined a group at school called SEED, Scientists Embracing Equality and Diversity. That club really opened my eyes that the world isn’t fair. One of the things that has stuck with me from one of our first club meetings (I joined SEED in it’s first year) is that even though there seem to be more women working as physical therapists men still hold more of the higher positions. As a white girl that’s fortunate enough to attend a private college I had never thought I would have limitations in what I chose to do.

So fast forward to sophomore year and the election of Donald Trump. It’s safe to say a lot of the members of SEED were disappointed in this election, with his comments about women and his disregard for global warming I started to realize that when you believe in something you need to voice your opinion. So when I heard about the bus going into Boston I thought it would be such a cool experience. But I was also terrified. I saw clips on the news of police in riot gear and I freaked out. But I mean how often do you get the opportunity to be surrounded by so many people who want to lift each other up. So I put myself on the waitlist and I was lucky enough to get in.

Here are some of my favorite signs from Boston:

I can honestly tell you that is a day I will remember for the rest of my life. Last year was my year of trying new things and I am so glad I went. It’s so powerful to be around women who support each other and want each other to succeed. I learned that I need to use my voice to stick up not only myself but also for other women (and men!) who face more discrimination than I will. The American Dream should be available to everyone. There are three memories that stick out to me about that day. One was when we were at the rally in the morning. They had a group of Native American women sing the National Anthem in their native language and it was so beautiful. The next is more of a funny one. After realizing we would not even get to walk because so many people showed up at this rally, my friends and I hopped a fence. Talk about women and men lifting up women, there’s no way I could have gotten over that fence without my friends, talk about a metaphor. And the third was just how breathtaking it all was. I remember I just walked marveling at all the pink and posters around me. It was indescribable.

Here’s a picture of me at the Boston march:

IMG_2958

So fast forward to this year. One of my best friends mentioned how a girl I went with last year was getting a group together to go to Northampton. I immediately texted her that I was in. As exciting as it is to go to a march, it was a little disappointing that we had to go again. It was just 364 days ago that we were marching and although things are changing it’s not soon enough. Two months after the Boston march a Canadian judge in a rape trial asked a woman why she couldn’t her knees together (full article). But then we have trials like Larry Nasser which gives you hope things are changing. If you want to see a strong woman in action watch this excerpt of Aly Raisman’s speech at his sentencing.

I felt more comfortable going this time. I have gotten over my apprehension about calling myself a feminist although I do not go around telling everyone I am one 😉

The night before we all met at one girl’s apartment and made signs. I borrowed one of my best friend’s shirts because I left the one feminist shirt I had at home. It’s crazy how much I had grown in one year, I had boarded the bus a year prior with no idea what to expect, no sign, and no feminist gear. This year I had a sign (with words on the front and back so everyone can see what I have to say!), a shirt, and an even larger group of friends to go with.

This year’s was definitely more low-key but I still had an amazing time. There were less people but it was still so crowded you could barely move at one point.

Here are some of my favorite signs from Northampton:

First of all I love the sign about introverts because as an introvert I totally agree!

Can we talk about how cute this girl is?! And her sister had a sign with the Star Wars logo for the rebellion that said Rebel.

IMG_8059One of my favorite things that was said at this march was not to make fun of Donald Trump’s physical appearance. A disabilities advocate was speaking and said you can make fun of his character all you want but when you talk about his tiny hands you are hurting people with disabilities. I think one of the reasons that I had originally been hesitant to call myself a feminist was because they seem very polar. You will not catch me saying #notmypresident because guess what he is. I did not vote for him but he is still in charge of the country I live in. I am not happy that he is but he is.  So I really admired that someone brought that point up because I think it is important to remember. Spewing hate is only making more walls when we should be building bridges.

While we are on the topic of building bridges let me tell you about Maddie, the girl I went with last year and this year. She is the definition of a strong woman and a self proclaimed nasty woman. She was the president of our school’s Rachel’s Challenge group before I took over (ahhhhhh!) and she is always starting chain reactions. She made an extra sign to bring to Northampton so that she could give it to someone that did not have one. She knows how to lift people up, emotionally and over fences. And here is our transformation picture.

Last but not least I wanted to tell you about my sign. The front has become my feminist mantra after it was behind me in my Boston picture. That photo was not staged it just happened that way. The back said “If not now when?”. A tribute to one of my favorite Christian songs (Do Something by Matthew West) that says, “If not us then who, if not me and you, right now. It’s time for us to do something. If not now then when, will we see and end to all this pain. It’s not enough to do nothing it’s time for us to do something.”

IMG_8149

That was way longer than I expected and I think it is the longest thing I have ever written on here but I hope you liked it! And remember we were all given a voice, to stand up for ourselves and others.

xox,

Marissa
